Los Angeles–based artist Jake Kean Mayman’s (b. 1980) meticulously rendered oil paintings delve deep into the psyche of twentieth-century American political history, exploring the legacies of US sanctions and economic coercion, legal trade strategies and agreements, and US intervention in the affairs of sovereign nations by surreptitious players. Mayman’s inquiry confronts oversimplistic historical narratives and one-sided echo chambers in an attempt to understand the true causes and effects of the mass displacement of civilian populations and destabilized economies today.
